Assignment Horror

CoverThis week on The Assignment: Horror Podcast, we’re missing a Becca but we gain a Sean as he picks our movie of the week, 2008’s Splinter. This movie isn’t talked about much but does a lot with a little as it creates a somewhat original monster for modern times. Sean tells us why he picked it and Richard tells what he does and doesn’t like about the movie while giving a grade at the end. It was also Johns first time seeing this movie so we get his fresh thoughts about it.

Ah, high school! Teen angst, peer pressure, hormone-driven stupidity, and chemistry experiments that turn people into mutated killing machines. In other words: the good ol’ days!

Pride

I wrote this on Facebook about two weeks ago. I’m sharing it here because it’s easier to link to this blog and have things seen than it is to link to Facebook and, frankly, I’ve gotten tired of writing and rewriting even the much shorter explanations.

Christ, this is very much some dark, scary reading. One aspect of the scary bit is the timeline. I’ve heard for a few years now some rumblings and outright accusations, but this covers a decade or more and is far darker than what I had heard. The thing that’s the most fucked up about that isn’t the timeline in and of itself, it’s more a matter of who he was at the time it was happening. For those coming into the story late…

Stuff happened in 2018. It wasn’t particularly good stuff. It was noisy and it was occasionally ugly and nothing particularly good spun out of it. I didn’t discuss it in any great detail back when it was happening and I have no desire to dredge it all up here now. But the fallout from the not particularly good stuff that happened in 2018 is more than just a tad somewhat relevant to what and where the convention found itself this year. So, know that stuff happened, some somewhat not particularly good stuff, and it put into question more than a few matters about the convention’s immediate and long-range future. There was also apparently a lot more on the line going into con this year than I knew going into it, and it created a vastly different experience at this convention this year than I expected to have.

King Kong Escapes (1967)

Assignment Horror

1If you’re reading this on the day it goes live, then you’re within hours of being able to drive on down to your local movie theater and watch Godzilla: King of the Monsters in all of its big screen glory. This is the latest big budget, big screen telling of Godzilla’s story, although this time they’re setting out to make it the biggest budgeted monster battle royale they can set in an American produced shared universe with more to come next year. I don’t think I’m spoiling anything about the ending by saying Godzilla avoids succumbing to a monster inflicted death here as it’s widely known the supposed ultimate end goal is to get Kong and Godzilla together again ASAP.

Maybe, as they want to pit Godzilla against Kong, we should look at how Kong has faired when pitted against other Toho creations. I know, doesn’t really matter, but why…
