Well, here’s something I never thought I’d be doing. Today’s blogging and commentary duties included a last minute fill-in as a guest commentator on Peter David’s website for the weekly Freak Out Friday piece. For those unfamiliar with the regular commentary he started a while back, it’s basically a look at the week in Trump.

“He’ll change.”

“He’ll grow into the office.”

“There are two Trumps. We’re seeing the primary and election Trump, but when if wins, then we’ll see Presidential Trump. He won’t be at all like this if he wins.”

These and other things were said by people who fall into one of three categories. They were said by the staggeringly ignorant or the wildly self-deceitful. These first two groups having in common an apparent ability to have ignored thirty-five-plus years of Donald Trump’s public words and actions. The third group knew full well who and what Donald Trump was, and the members of this third group were simply the deliberately disingenuous. Because the simple fact is that anyone who paid any attention to Donald Trump over the decades and had any functional brain cells in their head knew exactly how crass and how vulgar Donald Trump would be as President of the United States as well as how low Donald Trump would drag down the honor and dignity of that office.

Well, at least we thought we knew. Somehow, unbelievably, Donald Trump keeps managing to lower the bar beyond what even many of his critics predicted.

Since the election of Donald Trump as President of the United States, I’ve gotten to the point where I simply can’t take the political observations and commentary of any number of people and groups seriously anymore. The specific reasons change from person to person, group to group, but they all create the same basic overall reasons as to why I can’t take the political observations and commentary of any number of people seriously these days. Your words and positions now- especially in the cases where your words and positions from the eight years prior to Trump’s election are public record–just end up making you look foolish and/or hypocritical to a degree that just makes me want to laugh at you.

Anyone with a functioning brain could see these types of words and actions coming from a mile away. All one needed to do was pay attention to Trump’s 30+ years in the public spotlight and especially the man’s words and actions during the Republican Primaries and the actual campaign. The man’s ability when campaigning to to call actual facts a lie and to call others a liar for speaking the truth even as he spouted off a string of lie after lie was unparalleled even in the world of politics. Donald Trump is a man who does not have the ability to distinguish an actual fact from something he simply likes and wants to be a fact, and his habit of lying almost every single time he speaks or tweets about a topic reaches pathological levels.

He built a campaign in his own image that treated facts and truth with the same level of disregard and outright disdain that he himself did.  Then he won the election and began to create an administration in that image. White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer officially gathered the press for the first time to deliver a five-minute statement Saturday in which he made several statements filled with multiple falsehoods. The media noticed this and said something about it. Then Trump sent his official spokesperson for his Ministry of Truth out to talk on the Sunday chat shows. What she did and said- combined with what Trump has said in the last year -made Baghdad Bob look honest in comparison.
