Tucked away on the corner of 18th Street and Spring Street in Atlanta, Georgia is the Center for Puppetry ArtsIf you’ve been to Atlanta but never visited the Center for Puppetry Arts, this or next year’s trip down for Dragon Con would be very good times to consider rectifying this particular oversight. Now, unlike the Georgia Aquarium, this isn’t a sight you can see with just a short walk down the street from the Dragon Con host hotels. It’s anywhere from a 45 minute to 1 hour walk depending on who is doing the walking. You can drive to it in about 15 minutes, but what levels of insanity would you have to be suffering under to cause you to consider driving in downtown Atlanta?

Located in downtown Atlanta across from Centennial Olympic Park- just a few blocks diagonal from the Dragon Con host hotels -is the Georgia Aquarium. Officially opened to the public in 2005, it was the largest aquarium in the world until the 2012 opening of the Marine Life Park in Singapore. Beating it out for sheer size was no small feat. The Georgia Aquarium is home to several thousand species of salt water and fresh water life from around the world, and it contains over 10 million gallons of water to keep those critters alive and swimming in. Just a little over 6 million gallons of that water are used for the aquarium’s primary exhibit, allowing it to be one of only two institutions in the world to house whale sharks. You’ll see swimming alongside the whale sharks some of the largest manta rays you’re likely to ever see, as well as more fish and more varieties of fish than you can likely count in one single day’s trip to the Georgia Aquarium.

Harlan

That was a name you could say in many circles without having to add the last name, and no one wondered which Harlan you were talking about. This year’s Dragon Con is August 30 – September 3, 2018.

Every year for more than just a few years now, the Earth Station One crew has produced an annual series of shows designed to let fans- both newbies and long time Dragon Con veterans alike -know what’s going to be happening at that year’s Dragon Con while also dispensing some great advice along the way. The show- already under way now -has guests on who have a wealth of experience with the convention as well as guests who can give anyone a lot of tips and tricks to help prepare for and survive any convention; but especially the now five day nonstop party that is Dragon Con.

Combined with the The Unique Geek’s annual, just before con launched 50 Days of Dragon Con series, there are no podcasts that are better for getting you set for the big event or better at doing it in an entertaining way.

When the big reveal came, when we all first saw Jodie Whittaker walking towards the TARDIS, all fandom hell broke loose. Since then, things have calmed down a little bit. But the debate is still going (as is common with everything in fandom) about how much of a sea change we’re going to witness with the show and the Doctor when the Doctor finally faces the world for the first time in his over half a century of television as a she. I’ve been watching it discussed on social media since the announcement was made, and there were more than just a few discussions (and panels) where I saw the topic came up at this year’s Dragon Con. But, in all reality, much to the disappointment and dismay of some out there, we’ll likely see very little real change with the show and especially with the Doctor.

This week the horror community lost an amazing voice and advocate, and many people lost a true friend and loved one. There will never be another one like him.

Rest in piece my friend. You will be missed does not even begin to cover it.
